Pec pod Snezkou A skiing and tourist centre set in the Eastern part of the Giant Mountains in the Upa river valley and the Zeleny
potok and Lucni potok creek valleys.Pec pod Snezkou itself came into existence at the end of the 16. century as a third part of Velka Upa. It was established to faciltate extensive timber felling to supply the silver mines at Kutna hora. Wood cutters were summoned from Styria, Carinthia and Tyrol and on the resulting clearing they set up meadowland, built their dwelling called "boudy" (chalets) and kept cattle and goats. Thus has came into existence Luciny, Zahradky, Vysoky svah Hnedy vrch, Richterovy boudy Velka a Mala plan and so on. On this meadowland the cottagers made high quality hay twice a year and got further fodder for their animals from mountains hay fields like for instance on Studnicni hora, but also in the old forest areas. In 1880, there were kept 558 head of cattle and 166 goats. The development of tourism in the secon half of last century brought a new source of earning to the cottagers. The begin with, they offered overnight shelter in the hay and sold the tourist milk, butter and cheese. Later they adapted their cottages to let room. The highest mountain of Bohemia, Snezka, becam the chief attraction and later skiing. Pec pod Snezkou is one of the most important mountain resorts for summer recreation and winter sports in Czech republic. The town offers 8000 beds for visitors. Refreshment is provided in 35 restaurants. If you want to spend holiday not only with skiing or tourism, you have possibility further activity. Ride on pony, ride in carriage and pair or on sled traction with horse-back, tennis (6 tennis courts), squash, ricochet, protection swimming-pool. Favourite amusement is also cycling, minigolf, bowling alley, sauna, solarium etc..
