Jilemnice The oldest written mention of Jilemnice comes from 1352. The town was established at the crossroads of several local
trails according to the rule of the square market place. Saint Lawrence's Church was established on one side of the
market place and behind that there was a 15th century fort which was rebuilt as a renaissance chateau in the 16th
century. The town mainly consisted of wooden buildings and a series of fires destroyed important documents on the history of the town, meaning that today we cannot say when Jilemnice received its town statute. The town lies in the lower Giant Mountains on the slopes above the Jilemka and Jizera rivers. It is in the eastern part of the District of Semily in a protected band of the Giant Mountains National Park. The terrain is quite broken, consisting of several small valleys and ridges and the climate is the of a typical wet, lower mountain climate. The town lies at a height of 451 m above sea level. The town's protected monuments include the baroque Church of Saint Lawrence, the town hall, the renaissance chateau, which now houses the Giant Mountains Museum, and the curious little street with its series of wooden folk architecture. Jilemnice experienced its greatest period of development at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and the town is now a service centre for the western part of the Giant Mountains.
